On September 23, the Bob Burdette Center hosted Family Engagement Night at Emmanuel Baptist Church—an evening focused on connection, healthy living, and quality family time without screens. More than 100 nutritious meals were shared as families gathered to eat, laugh, and reconnect in person.
Dinner featured a wholesome menu prepared by our on-site chef: beef stew, quinoa salad, and garlic green beans—a balanced mix of protein, grains, and vegetables. Each family received a free meal kit with ingredients and a recipe card to recreate the dinner at home, helping families continue healthy habits beyond the event. Families also received bags of toiletry essentials with full-sized items to support overall well-being.
Instead of screens or devices, the focus was on face-to-face connection. Families played board games such as Clue, Jenga, and Battleship, enjoying simple, shared fun. Vikki, Site Coordinator at Mary C. Snow West Side Elementary, delighted both kids and adults with colorful balloon animals. The evening closed with a raffle, awarding two $100 Visa gift cards to lucky winners.
The event was staffed entirely by Bob Burdette Center team members, who prepared, served, and ensured everything ran smoothly.
In a world where families are often pulled in different directions by busy schedules and digital distractions, Family Engagement Night offered a meaningful reminder of how valuable it is to pause, share a healthy meal, and spend time together—no screens required.

The Bob Burdette Center is a nonprofit organization serving children and families in Charleston’s West Side community. Through its afterschool and summer programs, the Center provides a safe, nurturing environment where students receive academic support, enrichment opportunities, and guidance that strengthens both minds and families. Events like Family Engagement Night reflect the Center’s mission: to empower children and families to grow, learn, and thrive—together.
We are very thankful for our friends at United Way of Central West Virginia and the Pallotine Foundation of Huntington. Without their generous grants this event would not be possible!
