A Month Full of Color, Curiosity, and Learning
January is International Creativity Month! The new year is the perfect time to celebrate imagination, curiosity, and self-expression. Creativity is something we strive to foster at the Bob Burdette Center. It is more than just art projects as it is a vital part of how children learn, grow, and discover who they are.
“The desire to create is one of the deepest yearnings of the human soul. No matter our talents, education, backgrounds, or abilities, we each have an inherent wish to create something that did not exist before.”
Dieter F. Uchtdorf
Creativity is the ability to use imagination to come up with original ideas. It plays a major role in problem solving and conflict resolution. Children are often praised for their inventive imaginations while playing make believe, and it is important not to dampen that creativity. Pretend play is a great way to work through conflicts and issues by allowing a child to take a step back from a situation and problem solve. It is impossible to encourage effective conflict resolution and critical thinking without also encouraging creativity.

This month one of the ongoing themes around the Bob Burdette Center is rainbows. Rainbows are a naturally occurring but intriguing phenomenon. Their bright colors are great tools for self-expression, while their formation is rooted in STEM. Part of creativity is figuring out how things work, and we are excited to use rainbows as a tool to help us explore creativity this month.
