The main goal of our summer program at the Bob Burdette Center is creating a safe and fun environment for our students. That doesn’t mean we discourage a little friendly competition, though! We divide our students into classes by grade level, and each week those classes compete to earn the Spirit Stick. The Spirit Stick encourages students to be on their best behavior because they want to win it at our Monday pep rallies.
Our Monday pep rallies begin with fun games in the gym for all of our students. Everyone gets to participate together before each class selects a representative to compete on their behalf in games like Hungry Hungry Hippos. After cheering on their classmates, it’s time to award the Spirit Stick. The winning class gets to display it in their classroom for the entire week.
The Spirit Stick is a fun way to encourage teamwork, collaboration, and positive behavior within each classroom. It also gives us an opportunity to teach good sportsmanship, since only one class can take home the Spirit Stick each week.
