The Bob Burdette Center’s monthly theme for March was reading, and this was reflected in the lessons we taught, the activities we led, and the blog posts we shared. Each week, our lessons and activities were centered around a different literary genre, including fantasy, nonfiction, science fiction, and comic books. Having weekly themes that connect to the overarching monthly theme allowed us to break down our lessons into more specialized learning experiences that focused on students’ interests and engagement. Students also created reading logs to help encourage daily reading. We hope that by focusing on reading this month, we have fostered a continued interest in reading beyond an academic setting.
In an earlier post this month, we discussed our behavior incentive program. The reward for students who earned enough stickers was a fun day of board games. Students enjoyed playing Sorry, Chutes and Ladders, Uno, and other games, and they had a great time. We hope that, through this incentive program, even more students will be able to participate in next month’s reward.

Over the course of the month, we averaged around 100 students per day across our three sites and were open for childcare for 17 days. Since we follow the Kanawha County Schools schedule during the school year, we were closed for five days for Spring Break. Overall, this was a successful month for our program, and we are excited to continue our upward trajectory into April.
