Earth Day is coming up this month on April 22. Earth Day is dedicated to supporting environmental protection. It is a great time to reflect on how our planet supports us and how we can, in turn, support it. Although much of the focus on protecting the environment is often directed at large companies and organizations, individuals can still make a difference on a smaller scale.
Some ways individuals can support the environment include:
Conserve Electricity

When you leave a room for an extended period or leave the house, turning off the lights can help reduce energy usage. Unplugging appliances when they are not in use also helps prevent wasted electricity. Televisions, in particular, can be energy-inefficient and may continue to draw power even when turned off. Taking simple steps like unplugging devices and turning off lights can reduce energy waste and save money.
Reduce Water Waste

Turning off the tap while brushing your teeth can save gallons of water. This helps preserve our limited freshwater resources while also lowering your water bill.
Reducing Single-Use Plastics

Single-use plastics are a convenient part of everyday life. Items like plastic cutlery and plates are easy to use and dispose of, but they can take hundreds of years to decompose. As they break down, they form smaller pieces called microplastics. These can be harmful and accumulate in the environment over time. Not only do microplastics accumulate in the environment, they are also bioaccumulative. This means that microplastics are also able to collect in the body. Using a reusable water bottle, along with washable plates and cutlery, is a great way to reduce single-use plastic waste.
Our theme at the Bob Burdette Center for the month of April is kindness and manners. One often overlooked way to show kindness is by caring for our surroundings. By respecting the Earth, we help ensure that it will continue to support us for generations to come. We look forward to celebrating Earth Day with our students and encouraging a respectful relationship with the planet.
